today.

i am filled with despair.

i can hardly walk, from the weight of it.

i fill my days with jokes about wedding shows, and lighthearted conversations about the weather, and homemade macaroni and cheese, and elliptical machines at the gym, when all around me the world is slipping further and further into darkness.

"i can't go on. i'll go on." right?

The upside is, as society collapses, those of us with clear heads will lead the revolution...

Reminds me of Atlas Shrugged. Except that Rand's philosophy doesn't exactly fit on this site...

That's funny. I'm just about to embark on that particular reading project. Part of the Favorite Book Exchange with the wife. (Sigh) S'Okay. Not like I wanted to do anything else with the next three months.

Kate: You can't let the world be a 24/7 Despair Network. Nobody can. That's not how humans work.

Even in Baghdad, right now, I bet you someone's cracking a joke. Or complaining that their clothes don't fit.

kate - for some reason, that one sentence made me feel infinitely better. but i have this whole other "when should we flee to canada?" issue, which maybe i'll get into later :)

toast - i like to think i do a pretty good job of not being all 24/7 despair. for instance, i'd say despair only factors into this blog 15-20% of the time :) but some days, it just all comes together to knock you over, you know? some days cracking a joke doesn't make you feel better. some days you just honestly don't know why you bother trying to make the world better. some days it all seems hopeless.

if you never have one of those days once in a while, well friend, i envy you.

"You go back in history and you will find an ever increasing percentage of humanity either actively involved in or preparing for mass violence. Today, that percentage is lower than it has ever been, because the numbers and cumulative size of conflicts around the world are lower than they’ve ever been."

Just remember that no matter how bad today may seem statistics say yesterday was worse and tomorrow will be better.
