slow news day + new england idiosyncrasy = hilarity.

from today's boston globe:

Battle of the Fluffernutter roils Beacon Hill.

it began with a senator's contentious call:

State Rep. Jarrett Barrios, D-Cambridge fired the first shot, vowing earlier this week to file an amendment limiting schools to serving Fluffernutters just once a week as the main meal of the day.

peanut butter and marshmellow sandwiches but once a week? that's madness, i say, madness!

Barrios' amendment seemed anything but silly to Democratic state Rep. Kathi-Anne Reinstein, D-Revere, whose district is near Lynn, home of Durkee-Mower Inc., the local company that has produced the marshmallow concoction for more than 80 years. The day after Barrios announced his amendment, Reinstein fired off an e-mail announcing her own legislation designating the Fluffernutter the "official sandwich of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts."

only in massachusetts, folks.

but i've gotta tell you - fluff is frighteningly good. a jar of fluff and a bag of rold gold mini-pretzels is snack-time heaven.

i wonder if you can order it online...

Sigh. I haven't had Fluff, or a Fluffernutter, in years. Now I've got a total hankering...

Thanks for the story!

Why is it that I haven't seen Fluffernutter out here in the DC area? I miss the real stuff up from Boston...

Now that sandwich does sound like something for we native Massachusetts folks to be proud of!

it's funny, BoyCat was reading this post last night and said "you can get fluff here!" all indignant :) and i was like, "well hey, i have just never heard anyone so much as utter the word fluff in the past two years, so i just figured you couldn't!"

on my next trip to jewel (now there's a proper noun unknown to most new englanders) i will look next to the peanut butter and see what i can find!

wow, i'm actually also surprised you can get it in the midwest. It was nowhere to be found during my tenure in Maryland...and I fricking looked.

I stand corrected.

But hey, bulk shipments delivered to your door isn't a bad option either, lest you never need to go a day without.

Try one toasted on pita.... mmmmmmmmmmm.

Marshmallow was created by Satan.

I hate, despise and detest one food and it is marshmallow in any concoction. Not even in hot cocoa. Ick!

But since Andrew has purchased a jar of evil and since it sits besides the peanut butter I know you can purchase it at The Jewels (the south side way to say that).

And side-story. Andrew worked at a bagel sandwich shop in college. The original staff each had a sandwich named after them. Andrew had the Huffernutter. It was peanut butter, banana, and honey on a cinnamon-raisin bagel.

I hate Fluff, but love the Fluffernutter. I never had one until I was about 26 (maybe because I didn't grow up in New England?) but there's a jar of Fluff in my kitchen right now. I would never, ever, ever think of eating it on anything else, though. Especially not by itself, however I do have a cousin who loves the stuff so much she can eat it with a spoon.
What are your thoughts on Nutella? Don't people put that on some sort of sandwich too?

oh my gosh, marshmellow on sweet potatoes, yes that IS fantastic.

i have actually never had nutella. for some reason, i am ashamed of that fact.
