holiday observations.

1. well, it was a fairly disappointing football weekend overall, with two of the three teams i was rooting for eliminated from the playoffs. this sadness was mitigated, however, with the utter glee of watching Saint Peyton and his Colts brought down by the Steelers. holy shit, what a game that was. there was the horrendous officiating (since when does a guy catching the ball, hitting the ground with both knees, and maintaining control not constitute an interception??), the nail-biting defensive manuevers, that surreal Bettis fumble, then that even more surreal Roethlisberger tackle, then the missed field goal? my god. it was almost heart stopping. but i am very pleased with the outcome, because i just cannot stand Manning. that smug little prick - walking around like he's god's gift to football. did anybody else see that 4th down play where Dungy sent the punt team onto the field and Manning waved them off?? and Dungy did nothing?? seriously...my friend from pittsburgh noted, "Cowher would have gone out on the field and dragged him off by the helmet." and nothing against Dungy, i think he's a great coach, but how are you going to let yourself be disrespected like that? whose team is this, anyway? unreal. and then after the loss, in the press room, Manning's trying to "find a safe word" with which to criticize his offensive line? well, honey, you're certainly going to need a safe word after managing to point a finger in public at the guys charged with protecting your ass week in and week out. good luck.

2. i was watching dawson's creek this morning (shut up), and i sort of can't believe that the Michelle Williams of that first season is the Michelle Williams who could go home with a golden globe for best supporting actress tonight. and she'd deserve it - she was freaking fantastic in Brokeback Mountain. however, this is the woman who decided that in this morning's episode, the best was to play Jen Lindley as a convincing teenage drunk is to puke into her hand, and not over the fence like any normal person. seven years later, there's oscar talk. miracles do happen.

3. women, please stop wearing trucker hats. right this second. ditto with the Uggs.

4. you know what demographic i feel really bad hating but usually do it anyway? those slightly elderly ladies that stock up on random amalgamations of things at the drug store, and then hold up the line for 10 minutes getting everything out of their cart (there are carts, at walgreen's! who knew?) and spreading their coupons out and arguing over 30 cents here and 65 cents there. i want to bludgeon these women with stacks of Us Weekly, or bins of Chapstick, or whatever else is handy while i wait interminably to buy a roll of toilet paper and some dish soap. i'm sorry old ladies, i know you mean me no malice, but i want to kill you.

Oh no, people still wear trucker hats? I mean, the Uggs I can almost understand since they're warm (I have slippers of a similar material and they keep me happy in the winter), but trucker hats?

And ditto on the old ladies. I'll be one of them some day, but ditto.

I despised my students and all girls who wore those Uggs...till my boyfreind got some Ugg slippers for Xmas. Now I want to steal them and wear them everyday- build a house out of that material and live the rest of my days in it. I am still making fun of those that wear them with short skirts though.

I love that you watch Dawson's Creek. A friend and I were just watching them on DVD last week and we thought we were the only ones who would admit it anymore...

I'm throwing this out there: I don't think Michelle Williams was fantastic in Brokeback. Don't get me wrong. I don't think she was bad at all. I think she was passable. But a Golden Globe? I don't think so.
I have to admit, when she came back to him with "When you can support it..." I felt the cut. But that's more the writing, I don't think it was acted particularly well. Elmo could have said the same thing to him, and it would have been similar (take the moment to picture this...). There was a lot of crying, and moping, which she trained for during her 5 years on Dawson's Creek. Now, Michelle Williams on the last episode of Dawson's Creek? That was fantastic. See, I think she has it in her, but I didn't see anything special in Brokeback.
Anne Hathaway, on the other hand, those were some fan-freaking-tastic frosted feathered bangs. Where's her award?

I will be laughing for at least another 15 minutes picturing Elmo saying, with due emphasis: "I'm trying to quit you, Big Bird, I'm trying to quit you..."

Thank you Mike.

I am a happy Steeler fan...yes, there was some bad officating, that was definite interception, even the Patriots got the bad end of the stick(even though I am glad they lost)...

Did you hear Peyton after the game remarks, blaming his offensive line? That was just pathetic and small of him...

Just say no to Trucker hats...I think the irony has come and gone....like "Jesus is my homeboy" and other things of that nature...

my hated demographic: baby boomers. television advertisements aimed at this demographic--and there have been many lately--usually meet with a torrent of expletives

oh lord, don't get BoyCat started on the baby boomers...they are his favorite whipping boy! and i can't say i disagree.

and as to what is wrong with Uggs - nothing, intrinsically. from what i hear, and what others have noted in these comments, they are actually quite comfortable. the problem is that they exploded as a trend two years ago, and trends (sometimes sadly, sometimes happily) have short shelf lives. that means that, even if they are the most comfortable things in the world and you love them, you run the risk of looking somewhat lame and out of touch if you wear them in public after a certain amount of time.

them's the breaks.

Thank you! The hubby's a Peyton fan, so it was all "I feel so bad for him..." around our place. Screw him! Sure, he makes some cute commercials, but he so gets under my skin.

As for Michelle Williams, I think she deserves an award. The kitchen scene itself was brilliant. For both her and Heath. "Jack Nasty!" Nope, can't picture Elmo delivering that line as well. ;)
