1) why does that song "crimson and clover" sound like it's about something obscene? the lyrics are incredibly vague and/or nonsensical, and yet i can't shake the sense that it's about The Sex. but damned if i can unlock the mystery of that golden oldie.
2) why do women wear trenchcoats? ever?

I've never figured out "Crimson & Clover," either. I had the single version on a Billboard '69 CD. The oldies station used to play a longer version with a big psychadelic trip-out tacked onto the end. I loved it. Alas, WJMK is no longer Oldies.
Based on the "Hanky Panky" & "Mony Mony" lyrics, I think all their hits must've been about sex.
