it's a good question, and obviously impossible to accurately answer from just a news story. i imagine that the horror of war can end up bringing out the more savage and hateful sides of just about anyone, nevermind anyone who was already predisposed to it.
however, i think it's telling that there (allegedly) up to five soldiers involved in the entire crime. that brings up whole other questions of groupthink, peer pressure, etc etc.
Do you think that this is a messed-up kid who joined the military, or that the military made him messed up?
